Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh called on Thursday for a Palestinian uprising against Israel in response to US President Donald Trump's announcement Wednesday recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

In a statement broadcast on line, Haniyeh said "We must embark on a comprehensive popular intifada, just as our people in Jerusalem did," referencing a wave of protests carried out earlier this year over changes to the status quo in the Temple Mount.

Haniyeh urged all Palestinian factions to put aside their differences and form a joint strategy to confront Israel and the US.
