Israel's first-ever ambassador to China dies at 86

Zev Sufott, a British-born diplomat who served as Israel’s first ambassador to China, died on April 18 in Tel Aviv at the age of 86, and was laid to rest at the Kiryat Shaul Cemetery on Sunday.

Sufott was appointed ambassador when Israel established full diplomatic relations with China in 1992.

Sufott, who was born in Liverpool, studied Oriental Studies at Oxford and Yale, and later earned a doctorate in political science from Georgetown University. He was wounded during the War of Independence, and joined the Foreign Ministry in 1950. For the next four decades, he served in a range of posts, including ambassador to the Nterhlands, consul-general in London, first secretary and counsellor in Washington, and deputy director for Europe in the Foreign Ministry.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, two daughters, Tamar and Sarah; a son, Michael; and five grandchildren.
