Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Thursday sent his condolences to the family of American journalist Steven Sotloff, who also held Israeli citizenship, saying he was killed as a symbol of the West which the radical Islamists want to destroy.

“Extreme Islam sees Israel, the United States, and the free world as partners in democracy and Liberalism – values they want to see disappear from the world,” he said at a ceremony marking 40 years to the establishment of the elite Special Police Unit (Yamam).

Netanyahu said that the world was beginning to wake up to the dangers of extremist Islam. “Many in the world understand today better than in the past that the threats facing Israel are the same threats facing them, and if they are not nipped in the bud will end up in their homes,“ he said.
