The Terror Victims Association (Almagor) requested Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai to cancel the participation of journalist and new Atid party leader Yair Lapid in the "Songs in the Square" memorial ceremony on Remembrance Day.

The association objects to Lapid's participation on the grounds that politicians should not participate in such ceremonies and that he would be using the ceremony for inappropriate political ends.

Some other officials have previously called for Lapid to voluntarily cancel his involvement in the ceremony.

Lapid has responded that despite his recent evolution from journalist to politician, he will continue with the ceremony as he was one of the founding members of the ceremony and he considers it apolitical.
