Indonesia searches for survivors of small plane crash

JAKARTA - A small plane with 18 people on board crashed landed in Indonesia's mountainous northern Sumatra region on Thursday with a search in progress for any survivors, a government transport spokesman said.

The Cassa 212 plane, owned by local airline Nusantara Buana Air, was carrying 18 passengers and crew, said Bambang Ervan, spokesman at the transport ministry. Two infants and two children were among the passengers, he added.

A search and rescue team has been dispatched to reach remote Bahorok, in the Langkat regency of North Sumatra, to search for any survivors from the plane, which was flying from Medan city to Kutacane town in Aceh province.

Halfway into its 30-minute planned flight, the plane dropped off the radar and an emergency signal was detected by another plane, Ervan said.
