AIPAC lauds US decision to bar entry to Iranian UN pick

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee lauded on Friday US President Barack Obama's decision to deny a visa to an Iranian official Tehran had selected as its ambassador to the United Nations.

The leading pro-Israel lobby in America slammed as an "outrageous disdain for all opponents of terror," Iran's selection to the post of Hamid Abutalebi, who is suspected of having involvement in the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran.

"The very fact that Iranian leaders would even select such a person to represent them at the United Nations underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance against the duplicitous behavior of this regime – particularly in regard to its nuclear program," AIPAC said in a statement.

On Friday, the White House announced that it would not issue a visa to Abutalebi, effectively barring him from taking up the position as Iran's ambassador to the UN.
