Three reported killed in drone attack in Yemen

ADEN - At least three suspected al-Qaida-linked militants were killed in a drone air strike in Yemen on Thursday, a local official and residents said, as the new president struggles to stem the growing influence of armed Islamists in the south.

The militants were killed when their vehicle was hit in the southern city of Mudiyah. Residents said they saw two pilotless drone aircraft after hearing an explosion.

Washington has repeatedly used drones against Yemeni militants, and the latest raid appeared to be the second by a US drone in less than two weeks. Three militants were killed in an air strike on April 16.

Yemeni government troops launched an offensive against insurgents after they attacked a military camp outside the southern city of Lawdar this month. Dozens of people have been killed in fighting and air strikes.

Islamist militants took control of several cities in the south during unrest last year against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has been eased from power under a deal brokered by Gulf states.
