BENGHAZI - Libya's interim leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil has had a hernia operation and is recovering well, a doctor at a hospital in the eastern city of Benghazi said on Sunday.

Abdel Jalil, the chairman of the ruling National Transitional Council, told reporters on Saturday he had been for a check-up at a Benghazi hospital but that it "was nothing serious". He said doctors had ordered him to rest because of a minor health problem.

The doctor said the operation was carried out on Saturday night.

Abdel Jalil was born in 1952. He served as justice minister under Muammar Gaddafi but resigned early last year and joined the revolt against the Libyan leader.
