Noam Schalit on Jabari hit: ‘It’s not personal’

Gilad Schalit's father speaks to Channel 2 about Hamas military leader; Jabari masterminded Schalit’s 2006 kidnapping.

Noam Schalit did not show emotion as he spoke on Channel 2 about the IDF’s targeted killing of Hamas military leader Ahmed Jabari, who masterminded his son Gilad’s kidnapping in June 2006.

Jabari also helped turn Gilad over to the Egyptians when he was released from five years of captivity in Gaza in October 2011.

In televised shots from that day, Jabari can be seen holding on to Gilad’s arm.

But on Tuesday night, Noam told Channel 2 that Jabari’s killing should be seen within the larger context of Israel’s battle with Hamas.

“This is not personal. We were not seeking revenge. The fight against terror continues and we are united with the IDF in that fight,” he said.

But Noam, who is running with the Labor Party for a seat in the next Knesset, cautioned that any military action would not change the end results.

“Hamas won’t disappear and neither will Gaza,” he said.

At some point, whether directly or indirectly, Israel will have to find a way to talk with Hamas and end the hostilities between them, he continued.

Noam added that he had spoken with Gilad about the killing, but that all his son’s energies were focused on moving on with his life and not looking backward.
