The University of Haifa has awarded 44 scholarships to students in honor of the 44 people who died in the Mount Carmel fire of 2010.

“I am proud to be standing at the head of the institution that not only sanctifies academic research, but also its relationship with society,” the university’s President Amos Shapira said during the ceremony on Tuesday evening.

The scholarships, funded by American philanthropist Leon H. Charney, the chairman of the university’s board of governors, are awarded to students studying in the fields of social work and therapy.

Recipients are required to maintain contact with the victims’ families and participate in activities honoring their memory. Last year, examples of such activities included trips to the Carmel Forest and seminar papers commemorating the victims.
