August: Osage County is a black comedydrama that takes a look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. With Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Sam Shepard, Dermot Mulroney and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Fanciful Footwork

Avak (Dust), Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak’s new dance theater work, invites the viewer into a world with several doors and possibilities of meaning. Dance, performance, animation, illustration, design and sound each gives hue, tone and resonance to this fanciful work.

Top Class

Andras Schiff conducts the next concert series of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra with Hungarian cello soloist Miklós Perényi.

The classical program includes works by Haydn, Brahms and Dvorak. Schiff will also give a piano recital Saturday, 8:30 p.m. at the Mann Auditorium, Tel Aviv. Sunday and Monday at 8:30 p.m. at the Mann Auditorium, Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at Binyenei Ha’uma in Jerusalem.

The Latvian National Choir will perform two concerts with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in the framework of the Liturgical series at the Opera.

Handel’s Solomon oratorio on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Jerusalem Theater and Sunday at 8 p.m.at the Opera House in Tel Aviv. Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Opera House and Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Jerusalem Theater.

Conductor Valery Gergiev returns to Eilat’s Hangar 6 with the Classical at the Red Sea Festival January 16-18.

This year, the festival celebrates Ger-Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Massenet’s Don Quichotte, as well as Mahler’s Symphony No. 9, with the Marinsky Opera choir, orchestra and solo singers. There will also be numerous chamber music concerts at Isrotel’s Royal Beach Hotel.

Jamaican Sounds

Opening this year’s Jazz in the Mishkan series, pianist Monty Alexander and his trio, drummer Obed Calvaire and bassist Dezron Douglas, make their Israeli debut, bringing Jamaican rhythm-infused jazz to Tel Aviv on Friday, January 17 at 10 p.m. Alexander will also hold a masterclass on January 16 at 5 p.m.
