Boston area police say Caleb Jacoby, 16, has been located in Manhattan after going missing on January 6.

NEW YORK — The police department in Brookline, Massachusetts said late Thursday 16-year-old Caleb Jacoby had been found safe in New York City.

Police said at the time they did not have reason to believe the case involved foul play, according to local outlet Masslive.com.

Jacoby, an 11th-grader at the Maimonides School in suburban Boston, has been missing since midday on January 6.

The case drew national attention, in part because the youth is the son of Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby who posted late Thursday an elated comment on Twitter regarding the announcement by local authorities that his son had been located.

Some 200 volunteers, including friends and neighbors of the family as well as members of local Jewish groups, searched throughout the Boston area in a coordinated effort on Wednesday. The effort was spearheaded by the Maimonides School.

“Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers from the entire community who participated in the ongoing search for Caleb Jacoby today. We are deeply grateful for this outpouring of support,” the school posted on its Facebook page. “We will continue to support the outstanding efforts of the Brookline Police Department, and provide updates with new information as appropriate. We continue to pray for Caleb’s safe return.”
