At least 17 deaths, mostly caused by traffic accidents, were blamed on the storm that came up from the south, where it caused havoc on Wednesday, reported the Guardian. Over a foot of snow was predicted in some areas.

The storm, now moving up the east coast, left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power. In addition to schools and government offices closing down, thousands of flights were grounded as well. Both New York and New Jersey have declared a state of emergency.

The National Weather Service warned days ago that a "mammoth dome" of Arctic air would settle over the eastern United States to form a "paralyzing ice storm," according to AFP.

In the south, the storm left behind up to a foot of snow in some places, as well as dangerous ice and damaged power lines that saw up to 750,000 homes and businesses still without power in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Alabama.
