Knesset eliminates the term 'single-parent'

The Knesset voted into law Monday a bill changing the term single-parent to "independent parent."

The head of the Knesset Committee on the Status of Women Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid) asked for the change, because children often have two parents even though they do not live together or share joint custody. The Shared Parenting organization that initiated the bill said the term "single mother" made divorced fathers feel like second-class parents.

"The change is more than semantic," said the bill's sponsor, Hatnua faction chairman Meir Sheetrit. "It gives respect to the second parent and ensures that they will both be recognized as alive and involved in the lives of their children."
