Due to a fire near the Haifa wastewater treatment plant, the Environmental Protection Ministry warned on Thursday that unusual high air pollution levels were affecting the Kibbutz Rekhasim and Kfar Hasidim regions.

During the fire, different pollutants were emitted into the air, including particles that pass into the respiratory tract and can cause heart and lung diseases, the ministry said.

The Environment Ministry therefore advised that children, senior citizens, pregnant women and people with heart and lung problems not exercise outdoors. The ministry also recommended to the Education Ministry that sports classes be canceled in schools.

The ministry has been issuing similar warnings since Sunday. The fire is a result of trash burning at a pirated waste site, according to media reports.
