Israeli mission urging initiative to recognize Yom Kippur at UN

Israel’s Permanent Mission to the UN is trying to gain support for Yom Kippur to be recognized as an official holiday by the UN, David Roth, deputy chief of the mission, told a plenary of the Jewish Media Summit in Jerusalem on Wednesday.

The request for the recognition of Yom Kippur as an official UN holiday follows the scheduling of a debate on the Middle East on the upcoming Jewish holy day, meaning Israeli representatives would not be able to take part in it.

The initiative has already gained the support of the European Union and 15 member states of the UN. Having the UN recognize Yom Kippur as an official holiday would benefit Israeli and Jewish diplomats, as well as Jewish administrative staff at the UN and Jewish children attending the UN’s New York school.
