A 35-year-old Beersheba man died on Friday after jumping from a four-story apartment in Rishon Lezion to flee police who had burst into the apartment responding to a domestic violence complaint.
The incident on Friday began when officers came to the apartment after neighbors reported hearing screaming and the sounds of fighting and objects being thrown and shattered in the apartment.
Police said that they tried knocking, but that when they received no reply they called firefighters, who arrived and kicked in the door as someone on the other side was trying to keep the door shut.
Once police got inside the apartment, the man raced toward the balcony and jumped off. He was seriously injured in the fall and taken to Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot, where he died later that night.
Police said that the man was not wanted by police, and that they did not know why he would have felt compelled to jump off a fourth-story balcony.
They are doing tests to determine whether he was on drugs during the incident, they added.
