The man suspected of hitting two female sprinters with his all-terrain vehicle
before fleeing the scene near Kibbutz Givat Brenner on August 31 confessed to
police on Saturday and reenacted the incident.
Yaniv Feirovskine, 23,
from Moshav Ganei Yohanan, near Rehovot, was arrested on September 4 and could
face charges of abandonment after causing grave bodily harm if indicted.
Feirovskine originally denied hitting the runners.
A manhunt was launched
shortly after the accident, which left the two runners, including Olympic
hopeful Radat Baltah, moderately and seriously wounded, respectively, on a dirt
path next to Kibbutz Givat Brenner’s fields.
Members of the 15-strong
running team said that the ATV driver sped by them kicking up a large cloud of
dust. They said that after they signaled him to slow down he turned around and
drove back, slamming into both runners intentionally before driving
off.
Feirovskine said on Saturday that he did indeed turn back toward the
runners, but he had not intended to hit them with the ATV.
Feirovskine
was scheduled to face an additional remand hearing at the Rehovot Magistrate’s
Court on Sunday. Police were expected to pass the case to the Central District
State Attorney’s Office for the purposes of preparing an indictment against
Feirovskine.
