Life sentence for man who murdered his sister 17 years ago

A life sentence was handed down to Nabil Abu Hadir on Sunday for murdering his sister – in front of her three children – 17 years ago.
Abu Hadir, who escaped to the Palestinian Authority immediately following the murder, was arrested two years ago.
According to the judges, Abu Hadir committed the murder in broad daylight, at the central bus station, knowing that the children would be there to witness the attack.
He stabbed his sister 23 times with a knife, apparently to “defend his family’s honor.”
In the course of the hearing, the court heard the testimony of 26-year-old Tahrir Haj’ir, the victim’s daughter – who said that after the murder the three siblings roamed from one family member to another, adding that no one agreed to take them in.
“My mother was the whole world for me. After she died I was left with no one,” said Haj’ir.
A second sibling, Rashad Diab, told the court that he had a difficult life since the murder.
“I’ve seen people at the age of 40 who wept like five-year-olds when their mother died. My mother died before my eyes when I was eight,” he said.
The prosecution demanded before sentencing that the court take into account the harm done to the children of the victim. The two boys turned to crime in the years following the traumatic event – one of them arriving to give testimony from his prison cell.
Meanwhile, the victim’s daughter married at age 15, and now has four children of her own.
The judges refused to accept the defense attorney’s argument that placing the maximum compensation penalty for each of the children was “selective enforcement.”
Abu Hadir was ordered to pay NIS 100,000 to each of his sister’s three children in compensation for their loss.
