Two women were struck down by cars as they stood on a roadside to observe the
Holocaust Remembrance Day memorial siren on Thursday, in separate
locations.
The first woman, 41, was hit by a car after she pulled her own
vehicle over on the eastbound lane on Route 44 between Jaffa and Ramle to
observe the siren. Traffic Police suspect that the driver who hit her from
behind did not spot the woman in time.
The woman was rushed to Wolfson
Medical Center in Holon in moderate to serious condition. Police are
investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, at the same time, a 65-year-old
woman was struck by a car in Beersheba as she stood to observe the
siren.
Police said the woman pulled over to a section of a road reserved
for buses before being struck from behind.
Paramedics evacuated her to
Soroka University Medical Center in serious condition.
Meanwhile, a
54-year-old female teacher collapsed and died during a Holocaust memorial
ceremony at an Ashdod high school on Thursday morning. Colleagues said the
teacher reported feeling unwell before collapsing.
High school pupils who
are volunteers in the Magen David Adom paramedic service attempted to revive her
until an ambulance arrived. She was pronounced dead by doctors at the Barzilai
Medical Center in Ashkelon.
