A 29-year-old man tried to murder his ex-wife by beating her with a rock and
then stabbing her with a screwdriver, which he finally plunged into her right
eye, according to an indictment filed in the Beersheba District Court on
Thursday.
Eyal Vanunu and his ex-wife, identified as “S.,” divorced in
March after a four-year marriage that produced a daughter.
Earlier this
month, Vanunu called S. and said he wanted to see her for a few minutes, the
indictment said.
S. agreed and went to Vanunu’s apartment, the indictment
alleges, but before she arrived Vanunu hid a large rock and a screwdriver under
the cushions of a sofa in his lounge.
S. and Vanunu sat on the sofa, and
talked about their relationship, until S. received an SMS and a call from her
sister whom she had planned to meet.
When S. said she had to leave,
Vanunu grabbed the hidden rock and smashed her on the head, the indictment
said.
S. fell to the floor, blood pouring from her head, while Vanunu sat
on top of her and stabbed her repeatedly with the screwdriver, in order to
murder her, the indictment alleges.
As S. begged for her life, Vanunu
allegedly continued stabbing her, until neighbors heard her screams and pounded
on the apartment door.
S. screamed that Vanunu was trying to kill her,
and tried to grab the screwdriver – but Vanunu plunged it into her right eye,
the indictment said.
S. managed to pull the screwdriver out of her eye
and open the door, where she collapsed in front of Vanunu’s stunned
neighbors.
Meanwhile, Vanunu tried to flee, but was apprehended by a
police officer. When asked for his name, Vanunu allegedly told the officer he
was “Oded,” but the officer noticed Vanunu was covered in blood and arrested
him.
The southern district attorney filed a request that Vanunu be
remanded in custody throughout the legal proceedings against him.
