Edan Ohayon’s lawyer admitted on Thursday that his client stabbed Gadi Vichman,
the Beersheba father who was killed on May 4 when he asked a group of noisy
adolescents to quiet down at 2 a.m. so his baby daughter could sleep.
The
killing astounded the country with the ferocity with which, according to the
indictment, an 18-year-old was ready to murder a concerned father.
The
event was also dramatic because Gadi’s wife, Michal, watched the alleged murder
from their window and was at her husband’s side as he died.
There was
also criticism of police for ignoring Gadi Vichman’s request for assistance,
made two hours before he went outside to confront the noisy
teenagers.
The officer who ignored the call for help subsequently lied,
saying she had come to the scene, and later admitted she had
not.
Ohayon’s formal admission of stabbing Vichman, 36, made via his
attorney, Rotem Tubol, is significant in that it means he will at least be
convicted of manslaughter.
However, Tubol left the question of whether
the event was manslaughter, or the more serious crime of murder, vague enough so
that Ohayon’s defense will still be able to argue that point.
