Driver sentenced to 11 years in prison in Netanya hit-and-run

The driver accepted a plea bargain agreement for the deaths of three members of a family in Netanya in August 2012.

The Lod District Court on Thursday sentenced hit-andrun driver Shoshan Baraby to 11 years in prison following his conviction as part of a plea bargain agreement for the deaths of three members of a family in Netanya in August 2012.
Despite having been originally charged with drunken manslaughter, Baraby was ultimately convicted of less severe charges, including negligently causing death while driving, leaving the victims behind after causing them harm, obstruction of justice, witness intimidation and use and possession of drugs.
The victims’ family slammed the conviction and sentencing as too light, returning to the street a man whom they consider a murderer and who they say should have gotten at least a 20-year sentence (the prosecution had requested a 17-year sentence.) In contrast, Baraby’s lawyers said they would appeal to the Supreme Court, saying that 11 years in prison was unheard of for death resulting from negligence.
They said the court had impermissibly sentenced Baraby to multiple sentences for different charges instead of following court guidelines of handing down one collective punishment.
Of the 11 years, 10 were directly for the crimes from this case, and one year was added on for violating a previous suspended sentence.
