Francois Abutbul killed in drive-by-shooting

Police suspect known Netanya underworld figure and his brothers had been targeted by rival mafias in long-running turf war.

Francois Abutbul was gunned down late Saturday night at a gas station near Netanya.
Magen David Adom paramedics took him to Laniado Hospital in Netanya, but were unable to save his life.

He was arrested in January under suspicion he was planning to kill a rival mafioso, Rico Shirazi.
The same week, Rico Shirazi and another man were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to kill Abutbul. Police feared a war might break out between the rival mafias.
Abutbul's brother, Tavel, was arrested in March for attempting to kill his ex-wife and son.
Francois was arrested in March when police found that the employees in his bakery were illegal.
Tavel and Francois's other brother, Charlie, also a known underworld figure, were seriously wounded in an assassination attempt in January.
