Harpaz admits to Galant paper forgery

Harpaz first told investigators he received the document in an envelope while sitting at a cafe, but that he later claimed it was faxed to him by an unknown individual, according to the report.

The investigation is continuing to cause tensions with the security establishment, as speculation mounts that Harpaz could be covering up the role of others who helped forge the document.

Harpaz told investigators he forged the document himself, and had no accomplices in the act, Israel Radio added.

Police have refused to comment on the investigation or to confirm the reports.

Harpaz's alleged motive may have been to torpedo an attempt by Defense Minister Ehud Barak to appoint OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant to become IDF chief of General Staff.

Police will decide on Sunday whether to extend Harpaz's custody, or to release him.

During his last remand hearing at the Petah Tikva Court on Tuesday, police said Harpaz was suspected of attempting to illegally influence the testimony of a number of witnesses questioned in recent weeks over the affair.
