The Elders Foundation on Sunday denied earlier reports that former US president Jimmy Carter stated in an al-Jazeera interview last week that he is facilitating further correspondence between Gilad Schalit and his family.
The press release stated that in the October 21 interview that was aired last week, "Carter referred to previous exchanges of letters that he facilitated two years ago, and indicated that he would always be willing to help in this case."

Earlier reports had claimed Carter told al-Jazeera that Hamas had agreed to allow him to transfer a letter from captive soldier Gilad Schalit to his family.
Last month, Hamas said that it will not deliver letters from the family of Gilad Schalit to the abducted IDF soldier, or those from him to them.
The announcement was made by Osama al-Mazini, a Hamas political operative, who also said that there was “nothing new” regarding mediation efforts to reach a prisoner-swap agreement between Hamas and Israel.
“There’s nothing new on this matter and the case is closed until the occupation accepts the just humanitarian demands of the factions that are holding Schalit,” the Hamas official said.
