An Umm el-Fahm precinct cop was lightly wounded and robbed of his service pistol
during a scuffle between officers and five men outside the Wadi Ara city on
Friday night.
Eran Shaked, spokesman for Coastal District police said
that the pistol had not been found, but that three of the suspects were found
not long after the incident in a house nearby.
Police had pulled over a
car as part of a routine traffic stop, not because the men inside were wanted or
known to police, Shaked said. When the car pulled over the five men made a break
for it, and began fighting with officers who pursued them into the
night.
One of the policemen was lightly wounded, and was taken to
Hadera’s Hillel Yaffe Medical Center. Police were not sure why the men ran or if
there was any sort of contraband in their car, Shaked said.
In a separate
incident in the Coastal District on Friday, a 24-year-old man from Kafr Kara was
shot and killed during a dispute with an unknown assailant in the
city.
The man did not have a criminal record and was not known to be
involved in underworld activity, Shaked said, indicating that the shooting was
most likely the result of a personal dispute. The victim was shot a single time
with a pistol to the upper body, and was taken to Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center,
where he soon died.
