An Israeli government minister acknowledged on Monday that the barrier being placed between the Jewish neighborhood of Armon Hanatziv and the nearby Palestinian villages in east Jerusalem will not adequately deter violence.

"It's not the right thing to do from a security standpoint," Immigration and Absorption Minister Ze'ev Elkin (Likud) told Army Radio. "We had a discussion about this in the cabinet, and it was clear that this wasn't the solution. This is something temporary and isolated. We need to deal with terrorism and not build fences that can easily be bypassed."
