IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz met on Friday with the widow of
former chief of staff David Elazar, who led the military during the 1973 Yom
Gantz provided Elazar’s widow, Telma, with orders her husband
wrote 40 years ago, when the war broke out. He also provided her with a copy of
daily orders Elazar sent out at the height of the combat.
The meeting was
attended by the head of Elazar’s bureau during the war, Brig.-Gen. (res.) Avner
Shalev, and Elazar’s three children.
It was also attended by
Maj. (res.) Moshe Levi, who fought in Sinai during the Yom Kippur War and
received the Medal of Valor (Itur Hagvura), the nation’s highest military honor,
for, among other things, taking out an Egyptian commando post with a grenade
after losing an arm to a missile strike on his armored vehicle.
