Parents of injured American petition court

US citizen critically injured in a violent protest against the security barrier in 2009.

The parents of an American activist critically injured in a violent protest against the security barrier in 2009 petitioned the High Court of Justice on Tuesday, asking the court to reopen the investigation into the matter.
International Solidarity Movement activist Tristan Anderson of Oakland, California, was struck in the head by a tear gas canister during a demonstration in the West Bank village of Ni’lin.
Yesh Din filed the petition on behalf of Anderson’s parents, Nancy and Michael, demanding that a police investigation into the incident be carried out fully.
In January 2010, the Justice Ministry said no indictments would be served in the case and that a police investigation had showed there was no criminal intent in harming Anderson.
Yesh Din attorneys Michael Sfard and Emily Schaeffer said that this was “an extreme case of police negligence” and that the police had not examined the scene and had investigated the wrong people.
Anderson’s parents said Tuesday that their son would suffer physical and mental injuries and chronic pain for the rest of his life.
“To date, the border police who were within firing range of Tristan have never been questioned,” they said. “We live with the consequences every day but the persons who shot him are not held responsible and justice has not been done.”
