The Jewish Federations of North America lauded the White House for its appointment of Aviva Sufian as the Department of Health and Human Services’ Special Envoy for US Holocaust Survivor Services on Friday.

Sufian will focus on the special needs of survivors, who are disproportionately likely to live below the poverty line, the White House said in a statement.

“We are thrilled to be working with Ms. Sufian as we launch this new effort to provide Holocaust survivors the support they need to live in dignity,” said Michael Siegal, chairman of the Jewish Federations’ Board of Trustees, following the announcement.

The JFNA, an umbrella body representing Jewish communities throughout the US and Canada, also announced that it will launch a new effort to “bridge budget shortfalls for survivor programs” in coordination with philanthropist Mark Wilf.
