Labor Party MK Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, one of the leading candidates to replace Shimon Peres as president, will undergo a kidney transplant next week, Channel 2 reported on Friday.
According to the television report, Ben-Eliezer, who has been subjected to dialysis treatments three times a week, will have the operation immediately following Independence Day.
The veteran lawmaker and former defense minister received the green light for the operation after a proper donor was found. The operation is not expected to harm his chances of winning the presidency.
Ben-Eliezer has a history of health issues. Three years ago, he was hospitalized for a severe case of pneumonia which left him comatose for a week.
