Jewish MP threatened in Kiev

Ukrainian Jewish parliamentarian Oleksandr Feldman was threatened in central Kiev last week by uniformed men who hurled anti-Semitic insults at him, according to a report by the JTA.

Feldman, the president of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee and a leader of the Jewish community of Kharkov, reported to police that the unidentified men surrounded his car on June 17 near parliament, puncturing his car tires.

Anti-Semitic attacks are rare in Ukraine, and Kiev especially, but several have occurred since November, after the eruption of a revolution that forced former president Viktor Yanukovych to flee for Russia and has left hundreds dead. Feldman has repeatedly called for the organized Jewish community to refrain from involving itself in the ongoing turmoil in Ukraine.

Last month, armed, masked men threatened to burn down the house of one of Ukraine’s chief rabbis, Yaakov Dov Bleich.
