Report: Germany spied on John Kerry, Hillary Clinton

German media claims that German intelligence spied on phone calls of the two US diplomats by "accident."

The German Foreign Intelligence Service (BND) tapped phone calls made by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, according to a report by the German paper Der Spiegel. The report claimed that BND tapped a satellite phone conversation made by Kerry in 2013 as well as a call between former secretary of state Hilary Clinton and former UN secretary general Kofi Annan.

The paper also reported that the calls were not directly targeted by BND but were "collected by accident within the context of other operations."

Earlier in August Der Spiegel reported that Israeli intelligence had intercepted phone calls made by Kerry while he was trying to broker a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinian Authority this past year.

The report was confirmed by several sources in the intelligence community, according to the German paper though the US State Department and Israel both refused Der Spiegel's request for comment on the wiretap.
