  • AS HEARTBREAKING as the expulsion from the Gaza Strip was for the tens of thousands of people directly affected, as well as for their supporters, for the most part, despite protest demonstrations and passive resistance, violence was kept to a minimum. It is not certain that the same attitude will prevail if Israel decides to return the Golan Heights to Syria. In anticipation of such a measure, the Kinneret Academic College in the Jordan Valley is hosting a conference in which participants will debate whether withdrawal from the Golan Heights will trigger a civil war. The subject will be dealt with in a series of panel discussions dealing with the possible consequences, including the impact on religion and state in Israel, the manner in which the withdrawal plan will be presented to the public and how it will be reported and commented on by the media, how it will affect the national psyche and other related subjects. For more details and registration e-mail nurit@kinneret.ac.il or call (04)665-3762.
