  • AN INTERNATIONAL conference on female exponents of the visual arts from the beginning to the end of the 20th century will be held in Tel Aviv University's Mexico Building, Auditorium 206, beginning at at 10.15 a.m. The opening session will be devoted to the contribution of women architects from Berlin and Vienna to Israel. The keynote address will be delivered by Prof. Tamar Garb of University College, London, who will speak about Feminism: Art History and the Challenge of the Woman Artist. Monday, November 24
  • TO FACILITATE better understanding between Jews and Arabs, and in an attempt to reduce ignorance and prejudice, al-Qasimi College in Baka al-Gharbiya, the Nehemia Levtzion Center for Islamic Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Interreligious Coordinating Council in Israel (ICCI), in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation have initiated a project entitled "Teaching Islam to Jews, and Judaism to Muslims in Israel." The is aim is to bring Israel's Jewish and Muslim communities closer together by deepening each community's understanding of the other community's religion and culture. The project will be launched with a conference at Mishkenot Sha'ananim in Jerusalem. The first part of the conference is designated for a small group of professionals, but from 6.30 p.m. the conference will be open to the general public.

  • THE FACULTY of Health Sciences Recanati School for Community Health Professions Department of Emergency Medicine at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev will celebrate the opening of its masters program in Disaster and Emergency Medicine, with the first of a series of seminars focusing on Issues in Disaster and Emergency Medicine: What is a Disaster - a definition or a metaphor? The seminar will be held in the Goldman Auditorium on the BGU campus at 9.30 a.m. Presentations will include: The coping of the Israeli health system during the second Lebanon war; The Threat of Terrorism Involving Radioactive Materials: Challenge for the Home Front; and Coping with continuous threat - the case of Sderot.   • THE SCHOOL of Architecture at Ariel University will host guest lecturer Prof. Hilde Leon of the Faculty of Architecture, Leibniz University, Hanover, whose lecture is entitled Between Vision and Reality. The lecture will be held at 3 p.m. in the Raav Auditorium.

  • AS HEARTBREAKING as the expulsion from the Gaza Strip was for the tens of thousands of people directly affected, as well as for their supporters, for the most part, despite protest demonstrations and passive resistance, violence was kept to a minimum. It is not certain that the same attitude will prevail if Israel decides to return the Golan Heights to Syria. In anticipation of such a measure, the Kinneret Academic College in the Jordan Valley is hosting a conference in which participants will debate whether withdrawal from the Golan Heights will trigger a civil war. The subject will be dealt with in a series of panel discussions dealing with the possible consequences, including the impact on religion and state in Israel, the manner in which the withdrawal plan will be presented to the public and how it will be reported and commented on by the media, how it will affect the national psyche and other related subjects.   • SOME OF the greatest minds in the world in the fields mathematics and physics will gather at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev for the Moshe Flato Colloquia in Mathematics and Physics. Among the participants are Prof. Daniel Sternheimer, Prof. Sirinivas Varadhan, Prof. Misha Gromov, Prof. Maxim Konsievich, Prof. Giorgio Parisi, Prof. Michael Waterman and many of Israel's leading academics. The colloquia will be conducted in the Minkoff Senate Hall, Marcus Family Campus, commencing at 9.30 a.m.
  • THE JERUSALEM AIDS Project, in collaboration with the University of Tel Aviv's African Studies Program and the Israel Committee for UNICEF, will host a seminar from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. at Beit Hakibbutzim 13, Leonardo DaVinci Street, Tel Aviv. Presenters will discuss a unique Israeli-African cooperation in HIV/AIDS prevention through male circumcision. Participants include Dr. Galia Sabar, Prof. Moshe Westreich, Dr. Daniel Chemtob, Dan Shaham, Dr. Inon Schenker and Hanni Rosenberg.
