Childbirth expert: Doulas and training

Vol XXIX: I am a doula trainee, starting a midwifery program next year. I would love to shadow a midwife, or voluntarily assist at births, without pay. I was hoping you could give me names of home-birth midwives I could contact in the Jerusalem area?

I would love to shadow a midwife, or voluntarily assist at births, without pay. I know this is impossible in hospitals and I was hoping you could give me names of home-birth midwives I could contact in the Jerusalem area? A: You are correct in stating that it is impossible to voluntarily assist at births in hospitals because of insurance. I did, however, speak to two home birth midwives in Jerusalem and, while both said that you would not be able to provide any medical assistance, including internal exams, they would agree to have you observe them at the home births they attend. They both emphasized that their client would need to approve of your presence at her birth. You should contact Joyce Butler at 02-5337637 or Barbara Ben Ami at barbarabenami@gmail.com They are both Certified Nurse Midwives with many years of experience. I'm sure that you will have an opportunity for practical training during your midwifery program. Q: Do you know if there is a place in Jerusalem where I could take a short course (> 4 months) for prenatal and pregnancy massage? I'm a doula and such a course could help a lot! Also, do you offer chilbirth education? A: The best option for you would be through Reidman College (02-5002450). They are planning to hold a workshop for pregnancy massage practitioners in February that will consist of 6 meetings. Yes, I do offer childbirth education courses in English. I invite you to look at my website at www.childbirtheducation.co.il for details and dates of upcoming courses. Q: My husband and I would like to have a home birth and are limited on our finances. Do you know any midwives and doulas who need training that could help us? Also do you know any birth classes offered in Jerusalem? Thanks for any help!! We are due in the end of January. A: While a home birth with a doula trainee is definitely possible (for specific names, contact me offline at jroseran@netvision.net.il), having a trainee midwife attend your birth is not a good idea as she probably wouldn't have the equipment necessary to handle certain situations. You could contact a home birth midwife, Judy Slome Cohain (cohain@013.net) who has very reasonable rates for situations such as yours. Regarding birth classes in Jerusalem - it depends on what language you're looking for. I, personally, teach childbirth preparation classes in English. I invite you to look at my website at www.childbirtheducation.co.il for more information and for the class schedule. * * * Cafe Oleh experts have been chosen for their knowledge and reputation.
