Ask a hardcore soccer fan if eating is an important part of game watching, and you’re likely to get an interesting answer: Who has time to eat? During the once-every-four-years World Cup, food is just plain secondary to soccer. Of course, there’s always before and after the game. Fans gather at home or eateries and, depending on their nationality, there are bound to be certain foods and beverages present.
GOL! TASTE OF BRAZIL CAIPIRINHA
Makes 1 cocktail
Frank Reider, owner of Gol! The Taste of Brazil in Delray Beach, offers his recipe for a caipirinha, the national cocktail of Brazil.
✔ 60 ml. Cachaca (see note) ✔ 15 ml. freshly squeezed lime juice Lime rind, cut into small pieces ✔ ½ to 1 tsp. sugar (or sugar substitute), depending on taste In a cocktail shaker, muddle (crush) the ingredients together and then shake well. Strain the liquid into a glass of ice.
The more authentic Brazilian way is to pour the mixture into a rocks glass of ice and serve unstrained with the lime rinds.
Note: Cachaca is made from fermented sugarcane.
SABOR’S MANGO MOJITO Makes one drink ✔ ½ lime, cut into small pieces ✔ 6 large mint leaves ✔ 60 ml. simple syrup ✔ 45 ml. rum ✔ 30 ml. mango purée (or other fruit) ✔ Splash of soda Place mint leaves and lime into a sturdy glass.
Use a muddler to crush. Add simple syrup and muddle again.
Add the rest of ingredients. Do not strain the mixture. Pour over a glass of ice and garnish with lime. (Sun Sentinel/MCT)
