Tastin' Lab: The cherry on the cake

Making cheesecake can be such a challenging task, that sometimes you might be better off buying one from a trusted bakery.

BISCOTTI

For the holiday, Biscotti has launched a rich collection of both sweet and savory cakes.

We sampled the sweet cakes, which included a classic baked New York-style cheesecake, a cheesecake topped with grapes, one with mango topping and cheesecake made with white chocolate. All were sinfully delicious. We enjoyed the different toppings, but the one we loved best was the classic version with the sour cream topping. Perfect!

Kosher. NIS 85 for a 20-cm round cake; NIS 138 for a 26- cm round cake. 67 Hayarkon Street, Bnei Brak. Orders can be made by phone for all areas. Call (03) 570-4015/8.

BEN AMI

At Ben Ami, the bakers are preparing a selection of sweet and savory delicacies, such as cakes, quiches and other baked goods. We loved their savory cookies, especially the ones with Pecorino cheese. But to our taste, the best was the ganache-topped cheesecake.

The more traditional Savta Zehava cheesecake with raisins took us on a sweet trip down memory lane.

Kosher. NIS 105 to NIS 159 for cheese brownies; NIS 46 for Zehava; NIS 39 for yeast cheesecake. (09) 957-9589; (02) 651-0070; (03) 560-9960, www.benami.co.il

DALLAL – THE BAKERY

This bakery offers a celebration of buttery-sweet flavors, as well as savory pies and breads you can smell from afar. We especially loved the yeast ricotta cheesecake. As a whole, Dallal’s yeast cakes are fantastic. We devoured the Spring Sour Bread in minutes, and the classic baked cheesecake was everything one would hope for. If you are there, pick up a few savory pies – they’re excellent.

Not kosher. NIS 145 for a baked cheesecake; NIS 75 for a New York-style cake with crumb topping; NIS 90 for a quiche. 7 Kol Israel Haverim Street, Neveh Tzedek, Tel Aviv, (03) 510- 9292.

LEHEM YAYIN

This lovely bistro in Yehud dishes out a collection that will not shame the big ones. We liked its savory cookies, especially the Gouda cheese sticks.

The classic cheesecake we tried was delicate and tasty.

Not kosher. NIS 69 for a 22- cm round cake. 4 Derech Hahoresh, Kiryat Savyonim, Yehud, 057-944-3662.
