Police Commissioner Insp.-Gen. Yochanan Danino said a crackdown on soccer hooligans was in the works following violent disturbances that marred the derby between Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel Aviv earlier this week.More than 20 people were arrested for hurling objects at opposing players and disturbing the peace at the end of the game, and a woman was hospitalized after a firecracker exploded near her. A smoke grenade was also hurled at opposing fans.During a weekly evaluation meeting, Danino instructed police district chiefs to increase police presence in soccer stadiums, and to deploy higher ranking officers to oversee games.He also instructed police to prosecute all soccer fans who have been arrested for violence, racism, and disturbing the peace."We will get to all those who took part in rioting at the stadium," he said, referring to the disturbances at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium."We will not allow criminals to tarnish the reputation of law-abiding sports fans. This is a disgraceful incident that has nothing to do with sport or soccer," Danino said.
