A man, a plan

Instead of grumbling “We’ve seen this before” (“Scaramucci says no reason to fear Trump peace plan,” November 22), Israel should draft replies to all Arab demands during or before talks, given that the Arab taqiyaa doctrine queries the value of all deals in the first place. Prisoner releases: The Palestinian Authority, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, etc. will stop all inciting statements in the media and in school textbooks, and Israel will release prisoners only on the last day of the calendar month on a basis of one per week that is free of violence, public insults and incitement.

Fair settlement for the families of the refugees of 1948: These refugees should receive citizenship of the countries they have been and are living in, without conditions regarding their jobs, education or other opportunities and public service rights. Any compensation should be settled in 1947 values after the property lost by Jewish families in Arab states is similarly assessed for compensation.

Borders based on the 1949 armistice lines: There is a price for keeping the world waiting decades and on edge with war threats, so the price is amendments that will include the Etzion Bloc, east Jerusalem, Ma’aleh Adumim, Kiryat Arba and the Modi’in and Ariel blocs, in addition to the Jordan Valley plain, under Israeli sovereignty.

Secure links between the Gaza Strip and Judea and Samaria: The PA will refurbish the British rail line from Rafah, connecting it to Israel Railway’s network and building a spur between Kiryat Gat and Tarkumiya, northwest of Hebron. Israel Railways will allow transit rights over its network between these two PA rail branches.

Flatbed rail cars and double- decker coaches will take all Palestinian traffic off Israeli roads. If the PA finds the funds and personnel to build a rail line from Jenin south along the eastern edge of the hill towns and hills to Hebron, Israel will allow the construction of a South Samaria-to-Gaza extra-territorial PA link.

Cue from Mugabe

Having seen that it took 37 years for Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe to realize that his journey from so-called freedom fighter to despot was over (“Zimbabwe’s Mugabe resigns, ending four decades of rule,” November 22), is there any chance that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who has turned a four-year term into three times that period, will realize the same anytime soon? Abbas might see the irony that on the same day Mugabe finally resigned, the PA, under his own direction, was threatening to break off all contact with the US government, without whose beneficence the PA has no chance of funding its operations.

Kotel freedoms

In his letter of November 22 on the topic of egalitarian prayer at the Western Wall (“Next year in Jerusalem”), reader Stephen Vishnick is disingenuous in implying that “access for all to pray at the Wall” is in any way lacking.

All Jews (and non-Jews as well) have equal access to pray at the Western Wall provided that they respect the customs that have been in place there within recent memory.

People who want to make innovations in prayer are certainly free to do so provided that they find a new venue where they will not disturb the equilibrium of other worshipers.

What they are not free to do is forcibly change the customs of a pre-existing place of worship.

Freedom – to which innovators are certainly entitled – does not imply tolerance for anarchy.

CORRECTION
The caption to the photo accompanying “Researchers launch first Israeli marine station to study deep Mediterranean off Haifa shore” (November 23) should have stated that the researchers were from Bar-Ilan University and not Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The station is run by Bar-Ilan, the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR) and researchers from other universities.

We regret the error.
