US President Donald Trump lashed out against Senate Minority Leader Charles "Chuck" Schumer (NY) on Monday over the senator's seemingly waffling perspective on the Iran nuclear deal.
"Dem Senator Schumer hated the Iran deal made by President Obama, but now that I am involved, he is OK with it. Tell that to Israel, Chuck!" the president posted.
Back in August, 2015, in the days leading up to the vote on the initial Iran deal, Schumer announced his opposition to the deal
. "The agreement would allow Iran, after ten to fifteen years, to be a nuclear threshold state with the blessing of the world community," he said at the time. "To me, the very real risk that Iran will not moderate and will, instead, use the agreement to pursue its nefarious goals is too great."
But on Friday, Schumer himself tweeted on the topic, saying: "The @SenateDems agree with #SecDef Mattis and General Dunford. We won't allow the Iran deal to be undone."
He then added: "@POTUS’ M.O.: failure to lead. Throws destructive bones to his base, then tells Congress to fix it: Iran, Health care, Puerto Rico"
And on Sunday, he said "I had a great deal of misgivings about the Iran nuclear deal. I voted against it but now we ought to see, give it time to work,” following a press conference at his Manhattan office, according to The New York Post
. "The worst things Iran is doing now are not within the nuclear deal but outside of it."
As for the "ask Israel" barb, Trump was likely referring to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his party's overwhelming support
of the US President's recent moves to greatly amend or trash the deal entirely.
