Israeli actress Gili Ben-Osilio-Yaish, 45, died Tuesday after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was slight, fragile, even a little waif-like in appearance; the characters she portrayed tended to be vulnerable women, but she always went out on a limb to discover their dramatic essence. She commanded space on a stage, and her performances were memorable. Most recently she played the title role in Yerma at the eight-year-old Herzliya Theater Ensemble, of which she was a founding member.
A graduate of the Beit Zvi drama school, Ben-Osilio began her professional career at the Jerusalem Khan Theater, where she starred in plays such as The Virgin of Ludmir, Princess Yvonne and The Woman from the Sea. At Habima in 1992, she won the Friends of Habima Prize for her performance as Laura in The Glass Menagerie. In 2004, she won the first prize at the TheaterNetto monodrama festival for Femme Fatale. She also worked regularly in film and TV.
Ben-Osilio is survived by her husband, actor-director Amitai Yaish, and two daughters. The funeral was held on Wednesday at Kibbutz Einat.
