Playwright/director Hillel Mittelpunkt, whose new play Maxi and Me opens shortly, won the Creativity Award. Best Actor went to Lior Ashkenazi for his comic tour de force in Le Prenom (First Name) currently playing at the theater, and to Michal Stammler both for Sheindele and Glass Wall. Other prizes went to Assi Levy, Yaniv Levy and Hadas Moreno.• Jerusalem Post StaffNew season at Israel OperaOpening with a bang, the Israel Opera inaugurates its 27th season with opera’s most famous double bill, Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. Directed by Giancarlo del Monaco-Zuckerman and conducted by IO music director David Stern, Cav and Pag plays at the Tel Aviv performing Arts Center (TAPAC) from December 1 – 17.December is also Opera Month, courtesy of the IO and the Tel Aviv municipality, with free opera events on Rothschild Blvd. on December 2,9,16 and 23, and at the new Station Plaza (down by the old railway station near the sea) on December 10,17 and 24, featuring costumed extras and singers from the Israel Opera Studio.From December 1-3, in a big tent on the TAPAC plaza the public can watch live performances of Pagliacci on a big screen, preceded by a concert of arias by IO singers, and it’s all free.• Jerusalem Post StaffBlack Sabbath announce new album LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Veteran British rock band Black Sabbath announced on Friday they are reuniting in their original four man line-up for their first new album in 33 years and a 2012 world tour.
Singer Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward told a news conference at legendary Sunset Strip club Whisky a Go Go they would perform at the Download Festival in England in June 2012, and then embark on a world tour.The band, which first got together under the Black Sabbath name in 1969, said they were working on new material for the album, for release in the fall of 2012. There is no title as yet but it will be produced by Rick Rubin.The band also announced the launch of its first official website, www.blacksabbath.com, and said it would be making its first foray into social media via Facebook and Twitter.Oscars bring back Billy Crystal LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Oscar organizers last week brought back funnyman Billy Crystal to host the film awards after recent days of turmoil that led to the departure of one producer and his handpicked emcee Eddie Murphy.Crystal, who has hosted the widely-watched Hollywood telecast eight times previously, announced his new job on Twitter with a post: “Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.”The announcement follows days of drama at the academy after producer Brett Ratner last week used a gay slur at a screening of his movie Tower Heist, which stars Murphy.He apologized publicly on Monday, but his contrition failed to stem the firestorm. He resigned one day later.Murphy, who had been lured by Ratner to host the Oscar telecast, followed his boss out the door on Wednesday.The academy responded by hiring A Beautiful Mind producer and Hollywood veteran Brian Grazer to replace Ratner, leaving the choice of a host to him.The upcoming Oscars for the movies of 2011 will take place on February 26, 2012.
