Director Rina Yerushalmi's Itim Ensemble production of The Dybbuk, in collaboration with the Cameri Theater, will represent Israel at the Noorderzoon Performing Arts Festival in Groningen, Holland on August 28 and 29.
In Jewish folklore, the dybbuk is a dead soul that enters and possesses a living one. S. Anski's drama tells the story of Leah, whose soul is possessed by the spirit of Hanan, her dead lover, on the eve of her marriage. This Dybbuk by Leon Katz, adapted from the Anski classic, is a tale of love, death and salvation that, while drawing on hassidic symbolism and the religious language of the Kabbala, has contemporary resonance. Yerushalmi's production premiered in June last year.
