Orthodox actors to stage women-only screening at Begin Center

A group of Orthodox filmmakers and actors will stage an alternative, women-only screening of their film "A Light for Greytowers" at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center Saturday evening, after the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival refused to. It will also be screen at Beit Avi Chai. The film, a musical set in 19th century Victorian England, was originally slated to appear in the film festival which begins Saturday night at the Jerusalem Cinematheque. However, festival managers rejected a request made by the Orthodox female cast and director Robin Garbose to market the film in a women-only forum arguing that it discriminates against males. Orthodox women said that their religion forbids them to sing before a male audience out of concern that the female voice would arouse erotic thoughts.
