MASTERFUL MUSICAL MIXES
Concerts, workshops and guided tours of museums and galleries are just part of the fourth annual Maestro festival in the picturesque artists’ village of Ein Hod. Maestro is a nonprofit association that promotes music and culture education in Israel and supports young local talents.The opening event is a performance of the Israeli Bach Soloists. Other events include Goldberg Variations and even Sgt. Pepper and the Beatles by the Vocal Quartet.

3. LET THERE BE LIGHT
For the third straight year, The Jerusalem Festival of Lights is bringing together the world’s top light sculptors and light designers, who will exhibit their artwork throughout the streets and alleys of the Old City. As part of the festival, many tourist sites will offer free admission to the public.

5. CLASSICAL
LET MY PEOPLE GO
The Israel Festival presents a unique musical program based on Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt. Written in 1738, it tells the Biblical story of the Exodus from Egypt. The program combines selections of Jewish music, original music by Yair Dalal, piyyutim from the Haggada and Sufi poetry.

6. MIXED BAG
BOOKWARD BOUND
It’s time once again for the annual Hebrew Book Week where book lovers from all over Israel gather to read, write, discuss, buy and share their common interest. This year the festival will be held around the Haifa Theater. Highlights include literary encounters with Amos Oz and Meir Shalev as well as outdoor music concerts featuring Yali Sobol and Amir Lev. A series of new titles will be published specifically for this year’s festival.

A WOLF IN NEW CLOTHING
Possibly the most intriguing Israel Festival slot taking place outside Jerusalem is a multimedia performance of Prokofiev’s ever-popular Peter and the Wolf by the Israeli Revolution Orchestra from Rishon Lezion. The show is divided into two parts. The first half features the 30-piece orchestra playing the Prokofiev work, with the alternative Oscar Award-winning British animation film of the story screened as a backdrop. In the second half the ensemble plays a piece written by Rafi Kadishzon, with narration by Ephraim Sidon.

8. SERIOUS MONKEY BUSINESS
Looking for a place for the family to monkey around this summer? The Israel Monkey Park at Kfar Daniel in the Ben-Shemen Forest is hosting special activities for the summer holidays. The park is home to some 250 monkeys comprising 20 species. Admission includes entry to the new water park and sports challenge areas. Besides strolling among the primates, visitors can also take in a Tarzan treehouse, bang on a giant tom-tom and participate in workshops.

THE BEST MEDICINE
Laugh-tracks won’t be necessary as three Hollywood comedians perform in Israel in support of the Koby Mandell Foundation. Ted Alexander, who has appeared on dozens of TV shows including Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel and David Letterman, Ian Edwards – best known as a member of MTV’s Punk’d – and actor/comedian Judy Gold (pictured) join comic forces with Israeli-born funny man Avi Lieberman. WORD ART
In the 1980s, musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson became an accidental pop star. In 1981, her eightminute song “O Superman” unexpectedly reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart. More than two decades after she shone in the mass-media limelight, Anderson (the spouse of iconic songwriter Lou Reed) will be performing her newest suite of songs with a threepiece band. As in her other work, Anderson mixes music with storytelling and video projections.
