CLASSICAL LET MY PEOPLE GO The Israel Festival presents a unique musical program based on Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt. Written in 1738, it tells the Biblical story of the Exodus from Egypt. MIXED BAG BOOKWARD BOUND It’s time once again for the annual Hebrew Book Week where book lovers from all over Israel gather to read, write, discuss, buy and share their common interest. This year the festival will be held around the Haifa Theater. Highlights include literary encounters with Amos Oz and Meir Shalev as well as outdoor music concerts featuring Yali Sobol and Amir Lev. KIDS A WOLF IN NEW CLOTHING Possibly the most intriguing Israel Festival slot taking place outside Jerusalem is a multimedia performance of Prokofiev’s ever-popular Peter and the Wolf by the Israeli Revolution Orchestra from Rishon Lezion. The show is divided into two parts. The first half features the 30-piece orchestra playing the Prokofiev work, with the alternative Oscar Award-winning British animation film of the story screened as a backdrop. SERIOUS MONKEY BUSINESS Looking for a place for the family to monkey around this summer? The Israel Monkey Park at Kfar Daniel in the Ben-Shemen Forest is hosting special activities for the summer holidays. The park is home to some 250 monkeys comprising 20 species. Admission includes entry to the new water park and sports challenge areas. UPCOMING MUSIC WORD ART In the 1980s, musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson became an accidental pop star. In 1981, her eightminute song “O Superman” unexpectedly reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart. More than two decades after she shone in the mass-media limelight, Anderson (the spouse of iconic songwriter Lou Reed) will be performing her newest suite of songs with a threepiece band.
