Every February 14, across the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine.

The history of Valentine's Day and its patron saint is shrouded in mystery.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome, when Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, and outlawed marriage for young men.

Valentine defied the emperor’s orders and continued to marry the young men. When he was discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. According to one legend, before his death he wrote a letter to a girl he fell in love with, which he signed "From your Valentine." And thus became the first to send a "valentine".

By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes in Britain to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written. Nowadays, greeting cards are not enough and many companies prepare special editions of gift items, perfumes, chocolate and jewelry, to “celebrate the spirit of love and togetherness.”
