Levites to sing again, in Tel Aviv

Levites to sing again, i

Musician Ilan Green will attempt to recreate something of the heavenly sound of the singing of the Levites with a special concert that will showcase reproductions of several of the musical instruments that used to accompany the holy liturgical work at the Temple in Jerusalem in olden days. Green, a former member of the Israeli rock band Nikmat Hatractor (The Tractor's Revenge), loosely based his reconstructed instruments, including the gitit, the harp of David and the zilzal, on various descriptions in Jewish rabbinical texts. He said that the instruments were build as part of an "artistic musical process," without feeling obligated to historical accuracy. The unique instruments will accompany traditional songs along with original compositions. Green will perform with Avital Raz, Guy Scharf and Shahar Kachka. The Voices of the Levites will be performed on Saturday night November 14 at 9 p.m. at the Einav Cultural Center, Rehov Ibn Gvirol 71, Tel Aviv.
