2 chief suspects in Holyland affair remanded for 9, 10 days

The two chief suspects in the Holyland bribery affair were further remanded in custody by the Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The two – former Polar holding compay owner Hillel Cherny and his assistant Meir Rabin - were remanded for a further nine and 10 days respectively, the full period requested by the police.

The remand proceedings of three other suspects – former city engineer Uri Shitreet, one-time Polar partner Avigdor Kelner and accountant Eliahu Hasson – were continuing on Tuesday afternoon.

Judge Abraham Heiman said of the affair that bribery had penetrated the highest echelons of government, and refuted the defense lawyers’ claims, saying the remands were unconnected with former premier Ehud Olmert’s expected return to Israel.
