Abbas names academic as new Palestinian prime minister

RAMALLAH, WEST BANK - Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has named a new prime minister to replace Western-favoured economist Salam Fayyad who quit in April and formally leaves office this month, a Palestinian official told Reuters on Sunday.
The official said Abbas, head of the mainstream Fatah movement, had asked Rami Hamdallah, a political independent and university head, to form a new cabinet, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
